This week has been heavy on my heart as a close friend lost his father to cancer. It has been a time of sadness but also a celebration of life. When I work with people on finding their meaning and purpose I often ask, “How do you want to be remembered?” In other words, “What will be your legacy?” I had a client this week struggling with the concept of beauty and not feeling as though she is traditionally “beautiful.” She said to me, “This isn’t what I would want people to say about me at my funeral, but right now, it feels important.” We discussed her strengths at length and what she would want people to remember about her and discovered how little outer beauty really mattered as time progresses.
Then suddenly it seems, I was actually at a funeral, listening to others talk about their fond memories of a man who was a father, a husband, an uncle, a friend…and the impact he made on so many. When we start to think about purpose, why we are here, and how we want to be remembered, what is it that comes to mind for you? Do you want to be remembered by a career? By a change you made that impacted the world? By individual accounts of what you did to change their life? All of the above? What will your children say? What will your friends say? What will your enemies say? We don’t know, and likely we don’t get to know, but it helps us think about how we want to live our life.
“Every day is a new opportunity to turn it all around.” I say this quite a bit, and I don’t know where the quote came from, but I believe it. If we don’t like the path we are on now, we can change it. You may have ideas about what you want to be, how you want the world to view you, what you want to accomplish, etc. For me, I think it’s love. I want to be remembered for the way I loved others and to teach others to love one another. Above all things, I think this is my greatest value.
We all have our values, the things that are most important to us. I encourage you to list yours out, to think about what is important to you and why. Free write if you need to, first about your day, about gratitude, about how you are feeling. Find the gaps, the things you didn’t even know were standing in your way and move beyond your barriers.
What is one thing you can start doing today to live your most authentic, value driven life? So that all your beauty and light shines radiantly, so that all can see it, feel it, and experience it? How can you have more moments where you find yourself experiencing flow and the thought of, “This is what I am here for.”
